THE BLOG : COMFORT AND TEA

While your taste buds come back to life, after withdrawal you may notice that you enjoy the taste of tea differently. This new experience offers you an opportunity to be present in the moment. Tea is so comforting, a welcome new routine for morning and night and tea can offer many nutritional and health benefits.

Tea may also help with sleep regulation, sleep disruption in early recovery and after a trauma is very common. Tea is a calming comfort that can help with sleep, bringing warmth to your hands.

Here are some tea recipes to inspire your appreciation of tea. In Vancouver you can find tea cups and tea in a few great spots like Treasure Green and the Chinese Tea Shop.

The blog: life and detox vancouver

I have worked in three detox centers.

Your location, the substances and the complexity of your withdrawal will determine your detox bed eligibility.

The outpatient resource for withdrawal management is Rapid Access Addiction Clinic ( RAAC ) This clinic will assist with detox assessment, withdrawal management and offer access to community resources.

Screening for detox eligibility is differentiated between complicated withdrawal which requires inpatient 24 hour medical supervision and uncomplicated withdrawal which may only require outpatient medical support.

The number of detox beds is very limited in all regions. Eligibility for inpatient public detox is based uponr location and complexity of your withdrawal.

If you are a private pay client seeking private detox in a treatment center then you will need to follow their intake instructions. Clients seeking to detox out of country will need help negotiating items allowed for personal comfort. I help my clients prepare, I help pack their bag and take care of their needs while they are in detox. The difference between public detox beds and private detox beds creates different experiences and I walk my clients through both.

Working with a doctor at RAAC is important, there may be harm reduction strategies and safety precautions to follow.

Regardless of whether you are inpatient or outpatient there comes a point where you arrive in detox and life at home continues, for my clients I remove all unwanted substances, hire housekeepers and virtual executive assistants. I help your pet adjust and find short term overnight pet care. I pick up your mail and help you with your to do list. I visit your pet and say hi.

For your post detox care, I follow all of your care plans recommended by your recovery team. I begin by delivering all of your recovery essentials and nutritional supplies to your home. I provide ongoing support, from picking you up from detox to ensuring you have your needs met at home. I remain an available helper if you experience post-acute withdrawal symptoms.

I confidentially support my client with all of their needs and set them up for their success.

THE BLOG : A FRESH START

I think we all know someone who would clean their own homes before the housekeepers arrived.

As a sober concierge that is something I must often do, clean before the cleaners arrive to protect my clients confidentiality while they purse their withdrawal. People sometimes forget that after detox or treatment they return home, ask youself which home do you want to return to?

Housekeeping is probably one of the most appreciated parts of helping because it brings such a relief to my clients that won’t be returning home to their old mess. A spring cleaning is a really valuable part of a person’s fresh start.

THE BLOG : SOUP FOR THE SOUL

One of my favourite comforts when I am run down is to drink soup. I had such a great experience drinking soup while traveling that now I look for the authentic soup restaurants eyeing their menu’s for plantbased soup with lots of noodles and vegetables.

Soup is an old fashioned cure for illness, it is hydrating and nourishing while the warmth of the bowl soothes the hands.

While in withdrawal you may notice sensitivities to taste, texture and spice of food. Soup is great to capture many nutrients for healing. I sometimes look for vegan soup recipes but most of the time I boil beets and make home made borscht.

THE BLOG : THE SWEATS

Night sweats are a natural and necessary part of nearly all withdrawal, but highly uncomfortable and cause people to wake up. Here are some suggestions to stay dry at night.

Sometimes changing your blankets may help to improve night sweats. Lighter bedding that is more breathable and can absorb more water. Speak to your doctor if night sweats continue into post withdrawal.

Stay hydrated and embrace your body guiding you through the many stages of it attempting to regain its homeostasis. Sweating is a natural part of withdrawal, the body is flushing out toxins.

THE BLOG : LEARNING OVERDOSE RESPONSE

I had taken the recommended courses through the St Paul’s Foundation and St John First Aid. Where I really learned overdose response was found while working in a no barrier shelter, it was peer overdose response.

It seems to be relevant in the spirit of trauma informed care to learn how to respond to an overdose from a peer perspective. I worked for many month in the shelter saving lives being taught peer overdose response.

Everyone who makes a decision to use, even socially should take time to learn peer overdose response.

THE BLOG : AN EXIT PLAN

Why wait until life falls apart to try to find a safe space ? The chances that you will be able to pull your resources together when life has fallen apart is not likely to succeed without a plan or a helper.

The exit plan is your strategy if life gets too fast and you need help. Why wait until you are in trouble to have your plan in place?

I create safe spaces and opportunity for people to find help. Have a plan to get out alive.

THE BLOG : VIRTUAL EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT

If you simply can not take too much time away from work then hiring a virtual executive assistant can help you manage your time.

Most detox and treatment centers have phone limitations, an assistant can devote the proper time needed to respond to messages.

Taking time to keep your business in order reduces stress and improves your chances of success.

THE BLOG : SOUP AGAIN

Another soup blog because one is too many and a thousand never enough. I love soup when I am sick because it really brings comfort and can be nutrient rich to help boost the immune system.

Withdrawal is just your body trying to regain homeostasis, stay hydrated and get your nutrition right during this important time of your life.

I love plantbased soups and if you are sick then ginger soup might help ease your stomach upset.

THE BLOG : PET BONDING

For nearly all pet owners seeing your pet impacted by a substance dependency is very upsetting. There may be separation anxiety and other symptoms where you recognize stress in your pet.

I really encourage pet therapy to help people rebuild their relationship with their pets. If you can rebuild this relationship, then you may believe in rebuilding the relationship with yourself.

I believe in getting to know the pets in my client’s life so that when I am checking in on them while their client is away in treatment they will know that I am their concierge.

THE BLOG : LEARNING OVERDOSE RESPONSE

I had taken the recommended courses through the St Paul’s Foundation and St John First Aid. Where I really learned overdose response was found while working in a no barrier shelter, it was peer overdose response.

If we work together you may hear me speak of my brother who died of a toxic drug overdose. I always bring naloxone kits with me now, so every home will have one.

The conversation about overdose prevention includes learning overdose response.

THE BLOG : I LOVE SMOOTHIES

Smoothies are a fast way to pack nutrients into a meal, if you are recovering from lost nurition here are some easy plantbased smoothie recipes to inspire you to include a smoothie into your day.

The health debate about when to have your smoothie before or after your workout is better left to the professionals or your personal preference. I typically enjoy my smoothie post workout.

Sometimes I open up my vitamin capsules and pour them into the mix, I try to get as much nutrition that I can from my smoothie. I find that it really comes with an energy punch that carries me to mid day.
